Wembley triumph as Goode as it gets for Cobblers captain Charlie

Goode became only the second Town skipper in history to lift silverware at Wembley, following Ray Warburton in 1997 as he lifted the trophy following Monday night's dismantling of the Grecians.

Town won it thanks to goals from Ryan Watson, Callum Morton, Sam Hoskins and substitute Andy Williams, and have ended a near 12-month season with promotion to the third tier of English football.

"It's an unbelievable day and I can't even put it into words," said Goode, who signed permanently for the club from Scunthorpe United last summer.

"If we wind back 10 days or whatever and we lost 2-0 at home to Cheltenham, and then I am sitting here now as a play-off final winner.

"I said a couple of days ago, I signed here to get promoted and to actually pull it off like we did today is the best feeling I have ever had in football, without a doubt."

The Cobblers won despite losing talisman Nicky Adams to a hamstring strain midway through the first half, and Goode hailed the whole squad.

"We lost Nicky so early, but we were a goal up at the time," he said.

"I thought that Mark Marshall, considering he's not had a minute in the past few games, he was absolutely brilliant, and he deserves a lot of credit for that.

"Michael Harriman at left-back has dealt with a really good winger today in Randell Williams, and to get a clean sheet at Wembley and win by four goals is a credit to all of the substitutes who came on.

"This is a team effort from every single one of us, the boys that are sitting in the stands there, every single one of them has been unbelievable."

The team enjoyed Champagne-soaked celebrations after the win, and Goode believes it is deserved reward for all the effort they put in while football was shut down for three months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"We can go and enjoy ourselves now, and we can use this game as momentum for us because this has been a year's work," said Goode.

"During lockdown we worked so hard, every single one of the boys came back in great shape.

"To do three games like that in the space of two weeks and win 4-0 at Wembley is just unbelievable."
