We will give it our best in the latter stages, says Poppies boss Law

The Poppies’ inconsistency was there for all to see again this week as a poor 3-1 defeat at struggling Histon was quickly followed by a win by the same scoreline at Slough Town on Tuesday night thanks to goals from Rene Howe, Spencer Weir-Daley – with his fourth in five games – and Wilson Carvalho.

Kettering are now preparing for two games in the space of 48 hours as their clash with Cirencester Town at Latimer Park tomorrow (Saturday) is followed by a tough trip to third-placed Redditch United, who are in contention for the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division title, on Monday night.

Talk of a play-off push from the Poppies cooled following the poor display at Histon last weekend and they are now eight points behind fifth-placed Hitchin Town with just one game in hand.

Perry Cotton made his debut for Kettering Town in the win at Slough Town after joining on a youth loan deal from Birmingham City. He will be in line for his first appearance at Latimer Park when the Poppies host Cirencester Town tomorrow

But, with 14 matches still to play, boss Law is refusing to rule anything out.

And while he knows some sections of the support will be expecting more, he believes Kettering will be able to look back on a successful year once the campaign is over.

“With us still having 14 games to play, there is still potential for us to get in there,” Law said.

“It all depends on us doing what we have to do and then what happens when the other teams play each other.

“What will be, will be. We will do our best to try to win every game and if it is enough then fantastic.

“But if we finish in and around those places then, given the way the season has gone in terms of transformation and rebuilding, I think it will have been a fairly successful year, although I am sure some will beg to differ with that.

“We are up against some established teams at this level and some have a much bigger budget than us to play with and they are struggling to get out of the division.”

Kettering suffered a 1-0 defeat at Cirencester back in December and they will arrive at Latimer Park just behind the Poppies in 13th place having claimed a superb 3-0 victory over leaders Poole Town last weekend.

Law is simply hoping the good version of his team shows up tomorrow but he believes their inconsistency is still being matched by others around them.

He added: “Who knows what will happen?

“When you look around at what other teams are doing, it adds a bit of perspective because everyone is struggling for that consistency.

“Cirencester beat Poole 3-0 last weekend and that’s a scoreline that sums it up.

“We will make sure we are prepared and we will try to pick up another win.”
