We must enjoy the wins, says Steelmen boss Kinniburgh

Matty Gardner and Dino Tuksar scored their first goals for the club with the former’s coming from the penalty spot after Stocksbridge goalkeeper David Reay was sent-off for a foul on Phil Trainer after just 17 minutes.

Trainer added Corby’s third goal, which proved to be the winner, as they stayed in the hunt for a play-off place in the Evo-Stik League South.

The Steelmen remain seven points off the top six but move up to eighth place.

And caretaker-manager Kinniburgh insists his team, who travel to Carlton Town on Wednesday night, must keep trying to “put points on the board” as they bid for an extended campaign.

He said: “We have not won away from home for four or five games so that’s a great result against a team who are chasing the play-offs. We can see everything coming together.

“Because of the manner in which we have finished the game with our backs against the wall, the boys were just happy to have got over the line.

“But you have to enjoy it because we have come through a really tough period in January.

You have to enjoy the wins and that’s two on the bounce now.

“We now go to Carlton on Wednesday night and then we are back at home on Saturday so we are giving ourselves a real good chance now.

“We can move forward with the squad we have got and the way we have changed the system.

“We can only keep putting points on the board and hoping that we can catch up.

“It was full of entertainment for 90 minutes, there was a bit of controversy when we got the penalty.

“Trains is a very honest player and when I saw him go down I thought there must have been something and it looks like the goalkeeper has flicked a leg out and caught him so it was the correct decision and Matty Gardner slotted in his first goal for the club.

“It was a bit sloppy from us after that, we lost our shape at the end of the first half but we came out really well in the second half and got the second goal but it was up and down from there.

“They scored when we should have defended it better from a corner, which was poor because we knew they were dangerous from set-pieces.

“But then we scored again with five minutes to go and you thought that was it but then they get another and we were backs to the wall but we saw it out excellently.”

Kinniburgh, meanwhile, praised the “team spirit” after he revealed that a number of his squad once again played through the pain.

“We are carrying injuries all over the place if I am being honest,” he added.

“We have got some hurting bodies but that shows me the character we have got within the team.

“I threw it out to a few of them of whether they wanted to miss out and, to a man, they wanted to travel, be involved and give as much as they could.

“That shows the kind of team spirit we have got. We are pushing through for each other.”
