Steelmen's half-term report will be better than expected

Corby Town reach the halfway stage of their Evo-Stik League South campaign when they take on Leek Town at Steel Park tomorrow (Saturday).

And, regardless of the outcome this weekend, the half-term report will certainly make better reading than most might have expected after the first couple of months of the season.

The Steelmen looked to be in a real hole after they took just eight points from their first 10 games, a run of form that cost David Bell his job.

Steve Kinniburgh has been in caretaker-charge ever since and has overseen an impressive revival with the next 10 games being worth 22 points.

It has helped put Corby right into the play-off and promotion mix, although their hopes suffered a setback last Saturday when they were beaten 3-2 at home by Lincoln United.

But Kinniburgh is adamant that disappointing result shouldn’t be over-analysed and he is pleased with where the team sit as the festive period approaches.

“Obviously, we were poor in the first 10 games of the season and only picked up eight points,” the caretaker-manager said.

“But with 22 points from the last 10, we have managed to get ourselves back in with a shout of competing at the top end of the table.

“We now have an opportunity to compete for something in the second half of the season.

“And it’s now up to us to kick on and move the season in the right direction.

“We find ourselves in a strange situation because if we had got 22 points from our first 10 games then we would have been right up there early on.

“But by having a poor start and then recovering like we have, when we have a bad result or performance, we probably over analyse it more than we need to.

“No team is really going to go through a season without defeats and draws.

“We have done well in these last 10 games and we should not over analyse last weekend’s performance.

“We know we didn’t defend well and we know we have to be better in front of goal.

“We need to take all of that on board and get ourselves back to where we have been so we can push forward.”

Corby are now focused on tomorrow's clash against a Leek side who sit one place and two points below them.

“It will be another difficult test,” Kinniburgh added.

“They have been going pretty well and I am sure they will come here with the plan of getting something from the game.

“That’s something we have to deal with and we will work hard to try to get a victory.”
