Corby Town’s preparations for the new Calor League Premier Division campaign ended on a disastrous note as they were thrashed 5-0 by Skrill South side Bishop’s Stortford at Steel Park.

Steve Cawley struck twice in the first nine minutes to give the visitors the perfect start and the half just got worse for the Steelmen as Anthony Church and Kyle Vassell made it 4-0 before the break.

There was a slight improvement after half-time but Cliff Akurang completed the scoring and a bad day for Chris Plummer’s team.

Corby’s new league season starts at Steel Park on Saturday when they entertain Burnham.

Pre-season ended on a much better note for Kettering Town as they picked up an impressive 3-1 success at Stamford.

The Poppies kick off the Calor League Division One Central season at Potters Bar Town next weekend and they signed off in excellent style after the short trip up the A43.

Dean Thomas’ side were handed the perfect start when Andy Gooding put them in front inside the first minute.

It was 2-0 before half-time as Jake Newman continued his good form in front of goal by scoring from six yards and the striker added the third in the second half with a shot on the turn.

Stamford did pull a goal back but it was not enough to prevent a victory for the Poppies.
