Steelmen earn their stroke of luck as battle to survive goes up a notch

It looked like being another day of frustration for the Steelmen. Duane Courtney headed them in front on the stroke of half-time and they held on until five minutes from the end when Shaun Donnellan levelled with a fine strike.

However, Worcester goalkeeper pushed a Kalern Thomas cross into his own net at the death to hand Corby the points.

It wasn’t enough to move Wright’s team out of the bottom three but seven teams at the wrong end of the table are now separated by just three points in what is proving to be the tightest of battles to remain in the division.

Wright felt his team deserved the luck and, as they now turn their attention to a home clash with Gainsborough Trinity next weekend, the manager believes his team have changed for the better over the past few weeks.

“We certainly got a bit of luck,” Wright conceded.

“Their centre-half has scored an absolute worldie with the outside of his boot but we kept going, we didn’t fold like we have done in the past.

“Fortunately for us their goalkeeper has made an error but I think we deserved that bit of luck and it is a massive three points for us.

“It is a marker for the rest of the season and now the question is – can we follow it up at home against Gainsborough next weekend and win back-to-back games for the first time this season?

“We are under no illusions. It is one game and now we have to work even harder this week to make sure we are ready for Saturday.

“But I am delighted. Over the past few weeks the boys have really been buying into the gameplans and sticking to them and it is pleasing to see it come off for them.

“They are fighting for 90 minutes and the most pleasing thing is that I am able to talk about all-round team performances rather than having to pick out individual displays.

“In the past three or four weeks, I think the Corby Town that people know from my time here have come back.

“Everything feels better. The boys are playing as a team and they are working hard for each other. They are buying into the hard work ethic that is being demanded of them.”
