Steelmen boss Wright desperate to get smiles back on faces

The Steelmen return to action in the Vanarama National League North with a home clash against Tamworth after two successive weekends of kicking their heels after last Saturday’s match at Bradford Park Avenue was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

The need for wins remains as great as ever with Corby now rooted to the foot of the table following AFC Telford United’s 5-1 thrashing of FC United of Manchester on Tuesday night, although they are still just a point adrift of safety.

But, if they are to boost their hopes of avoiding the drop, then turning their home form must be high on the priority list.

You have to go back to November 7 to find the last time Wright’s team were successful on their own pitch as they beat AFC Telford United 3-2 – one of only three home victories this season.

And the manager is keen for his players to produce a performance and result that will instill new belief that their team can indeed avoid relegation.

“We really owe the supporters a performance and result at home and that’s something the players are well aware of,” Wright said.

“They want to go home with smiles on their faces and being a Corby Town fan has not been easy this season.

“Hopefully they will leave Steel Park on Saturday with a smile on their face and with a bit more belief.

“I hope we can get them thinking that we can do this. I still feel it is in our own hands.”

What Corby don’t need is a repeat of what happened when they faced Tamworth in the first round of the FA Trophy at the end of November.

The Steelmen were in control and leading 2-1 with 18 minutes to go. But an almighty capitulation saw them conceded four goals in just eight minutes before they were condemned to a humbling 6-2 defeat.

“I think our players can take confidence from the fact that for 72 minutes we were the better side in that FA Trophy match,” Wright added.

“But, by the same token, Tamworth will be believing that if they are in the game late on then they have seen us cave in before.

“We have to go into the game full of confidence and if we do go in front then we have to stay focused and ensure we manage things properly.”
