Squad shows its strength as Poppies move into the play-off places

The Poppies made it 10 games without defeat as goals from Rene Howe, Ben Baker – with his first league goal for the club – and Ben Stephens ensured they stayed on course for an extended campaign.

Kettering moved into fifth place on goals scored with five matches to play and their position could be strengthened when they take on third-placed Leamington in a huge game at Latimer Park on Tuesday night.

With another clash against relegated Bedworth United to come on Thursday, Law rotated his squad at Chesham as he made no fewer than five changes to his starting line-up.

And the decision paid dividends as Kettering’s incredible revival continued.

“We showed faith and belief in our squad and I think the result just shows how strong we are at the moment,” the Poppies boss said.

“We played some very impressive football, particularly in the first half.

“We have come into some good form at the right time and this squad of players have only been beaten four times since November, it’s been a great run.

“And it has given us enough confidence that we now believe we can go into every game and keep on winning.”

Law, meanwhile, reserved a special word of praise for Baker.

The youngster, who has emerged from the club’s under-21 side this season, set up the opener for Howe before scoring the second himself.

And Law added: “Ben is becoming a very good footballer and I think he showed that again.

“He did very well for the first goal with his cross to Rene after some good team play.

“And the second goal came about after some excellent football and he was there to score it at the far post.

“It was a very good day for Ben and us as a club.”
