Solid Steelmen stay on top

Corby Town will head into the new year on top of the BetVictor Southern League Division One Central after they secured a comfortable 3-0 win at Yaxley on Boxing Day.

The Steelmen were given the perfect start when Ryan Robbins put them in front after just eight minutes and the same player doubled the advantage before the break.

Corby created plenty of opportunities but, in the end, they could only add one more in the second half when a Yaxley player put through his own net.

It means the Steelmen will kick-off 2020 with a five-point lead at the summit.

And joint-manager Gary Mulligan said: “Coming here on an astro pitch for a 1pm kick-off on Boxing Day in the wind and the rain, the lads have grafted and they showed quality at times as well.

“It was 3-0, it probably should have been five or six but we got the clean sheet.

“It was a good first half and we just told them to keep going and get in their faces because we knew it would give us more chances.

“They were playing three at the back so all the space was down the sides and we did create more chances but just didn’t take them.

“It was all about game management and not switching off in the end. We just needed to stay solid.

“But three goals and a clean sheet away from home makes it a great performance.”

The Steelmen now have a six-day break until their next match, which will be against Bedford Town at Steel Park on New Year’s Day.

And Mulligan believes that break will be useful for his team with a couple of players still carrying knocks.

“We have got one or two injuries in there, Elliot (Sandy) didn’t start because he’s carrying a bit of a niggle and Jake Duffy came back into it and was brilliant,” the joint-boss added.

“We have got six days now which will give us a bit of rest before the New Year’s Day game.”
