Ian Sampson knows his Corby Town side are in for a “massive challenge” when they take on his former club Northampton Town in their first home pre-season friendly of the year tomorrow (Saturday).

The Steelmen face Aidy Boothroyd’s team having opened their pre-season campaign with a 4-1 success at Harborough Town on Wednesday.

It will be the first time Sampson had gone up against his former club since he was sacked last year.

But the Steelmen boss doesn’t believe it will be strange for him on a personal note when he faces the club at which he owns legendary status for his time there as both a player and manager.

“I am really looking forward to it,” Sampson said.

“I hope the weather is good and I hope the Northampton fans come over in force to see their team for the first time.

“And I really hope the Corby public come out and see what we have on offer.

“I think Aidy is building an exciting team down there this season and it is going to be a massive challenge.

“It is a step up in quality from Wednesday night but even if we do well against Northampton, I won’t be reading too much into it.

“On a personal level, I wouldn’t say it will be strange for me.

“There are probably only half a dozen players who are still there from when I was manager, although it will be good to see all the guys from behind the scenes again.

“But my time at Northampton is what it is – history.

“I have a job to do here and I am concentrating solely on Corby Town.”
