Callum Powell believes Kettering Town have got it in them to “surprise a few teams” this season.

The winger has enjoyed a flying start to life at Latimer Park after joining from Pitching In Southern League Premier Central side Stratford Town.

He has scored three goals in four matches, including the winner in Saturday’s 2-1 success over Blyth Spartans, and is yet to taste defeat in a Kettering shirt with Paul Cox’s men now unbeaten in their last four Vanarama National League North matches.

And, as they prepare for a tough test at much fancied York City tomorrow (Tuesday) night, Powell can feel the belief growing in the Poppies dressing-room.

“I am really enjoying it,” said Powell, who began his career as a youngster at Northampton Town.

“That was my fourth game and we have drawn two and now won two and you can see the progression of the team.

“We are climbing up the league a bit and I think you can see the organisation and the structure of the team is coming together.

“I am happy with the start I have had. I’ve played four games and scored three goals and there’s been a couple of assists as well.

“But the most important thing is the team and we have picked up some points.

“The league looks open and everyone is beating everyone. As long as you do the simple things and the basics well, we’ve got the quality to create chances and score goals.

“You can see the belief growing and you can feel it in the dressing-room.

“The lads are getting on really well, it’s a great bunch of boys.

“As long as we believe in ourselves and stay organised, I think we will get a lot of good results and surprise a few teams this year.”

Powell has played in the National League after a spell at Wrexham and, since then, has featured for the likes of Tamworth, Stourbridge and Nuneaton Borough.

He was in good form for Stratford in the early stages of this season but now feels it’s the right time to prove he can do it at a higher level again.

“I started lower down and went up to the National League and played for Wrexham,” he added.

“I went to Tamworth in the National League North but I was a lot younger then and if I am brutally honest, I have worked extremely hard on my game physically, because I am small, but also technically on my end product because that was what was letting me down beforehand.

“I was in double figures for goals before March last season and it was my decision to stay in the league below, probably because of work more than anything else.

“But I really want to kick on again and prove to everyone that I can play at a higher level.”
