Poppies know they have to go big

Marcus Law knows Kettering Town must take 'big points' from their next two home matches if they are to remain in contention for the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division play-offs.

The Poppies played their first match at Latimer Park this year on Tuesday night but a poor second-half display saw struggling Frome Town battle back from a goal down to claim a deserved 1-1 draw.

Boss Law was a frustrated man as his team were unable to follow up a fine 2-0 victory at second-placed Chippenham Town last weekend.

But the home games keep coming for the Poppies as they entertain sixth-placed Dunstable Town on Saturday before hosting Dorchester Town next Tuesday.

Kettering are eight points behind Hungerford Town, who currently occupy the final play-off position.

They still have a couple of games in hand but Law is well aware that his team are now dealing in wins if they want to make a push in the final 17 matches.

“Once again we have played a team lower in the table and it was an opportunity to push on and squeeze the gap and we haven’t taken it,” Law said.

“We can talk about missed chances and a goalkeeper making saves but the 90 minutes have gone and I am very frustrated that we haven’t taken our opportunity again.

“If you put the Chippenham game with Frome, you would look at four points. What’s questionable is that we have done it the hard way round.

“We have to stop doing that. We have two home games now and we have to make sure we come away with big points.

“You can look at the table, games in hand and being at home but we have to go and do it. It’s as simple as that.

“We are in a position where every game is a six-pointer. We have got Dunstable and then Dorchester and we have got to go and do something.

“We seem destined to do things the hard way.

“If I’d had this group at the start of the season then I feel we would be in a different position.

“What’s frustrating is that we know we are capable of being up there but when the time comes to show it, we aren’t doing it.

“We went to the team who are second and came back with a win and a clean sheet. Then we came home and played a team in the bottom four and we have drawn. For what this club stands for, that’s not acceptable.”
