Picture is clearer as Steelmen get ready for Bradford trip

Tommy Wright and Corby Town head to Bradford Park Avenue tomorrow as they continue their bid for survival in the Vanarama National League North

Corby Town were without a game while their relegation rivals were all in action.

And, despite a Saturday of inactivity, the damage was limited as the four teams in and around the Steelmen – AFC Telford United, Brackley Town, Lowestoft Town and Hednesford Town – all tasted defeat.

FC United of Manchester staged an incredible fightback from 3-0 down to beat Harrogate Town to move clear of the bottom three.

But Corby remain just a point adrift of safety and, just as importantly, four points behind Bradford Park Avenue who host the Steelmen this weekend.

Tommy Wright conceded it was “nerve-wracking” watching the other scores come in while his team were kicking their heels.

But he is glad the league table has a more “real” feel to it with teams now catching up on their fixtures.

“Like I said last week, I was happy to sit back and see what happened,” the Steelmen boss said.

“Teams need to make games up on us and they did that on Saturday and now we have a clearer picture of how it looks.

“It was a bit nerve-wracking, especially with FC United coming from 3-0 down to beat Harrogate.

“But you can’t be greedy. The reality is that the four teams we needed to lose did.

“Things look a bit more real as far as the league table is concerned and now we can really focus on the job at hand.”

That next job takes Corby to Yorkshire to take on a Bradford side they beat 2-0 at Steel Park during the six-match unbeaten run at the start of the season.

Plenty has changed since that encouraging opening but, despite the massive slump in form, the Steelmen have suffered just one defeat in their last five matches on the road.

And Wright knows his team have had plenty of time to prepare for this weekend’s clash.

“It’s another game of football to focus on,” he added.

“It doesn’t matter to me at the moment whether we are at home or away because the objective is the same. We need more points on the board.

“The boys were in for training on Saturday, Monday and Thursday.

“We have had a lot of time to prepare for one game and hopefully we will be ready to go and try to pick up a positive result.”

Ellis Myles is standing by to make his debut for Corby after he joined the club from Stamford last weekend.
