Peaks won't set specific targets as Diamonds bid to bounce back

Ten games remain in AFC Rushden & Diamonds' bid to win the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One Central title.

The first of those is at Potters Bar Town tomorrow (Saturday) and leaders Diamonds head into it with just a one-point advantage after second-placed Kings Langley claimed a 1-0 win at the Dog & Duck last weekend.

They also have a game in hand on Andy Peaks’ side, who could still be overhauled by Egham Town and Royston Town, whose scheduled clash on Tuesday night was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Peaks has not set any targets for his team from the final 10 matches.

Instead, he has just urged them to maintain their work ethic for the final few weeks of the campaign.

And he is certain his players will be keen to put things right after an uncharacteristically poor display in last weekend’s top-of-the-table clash.

“I’m not setting any targets for the last 10 games,” Peaks said.

“We will take it a game at a time and see where they take us.

“The one thing I do know is that if we work as hard for the next seven weeks as we have done all season then we won’t be far away.

“I certainly couldn’t question the lads’ work rate last weekend. We just didn’t have the quality on the day.

“I am still feeling very positive, it was one game. We had an off day and Kings Langley took advantage of it.

“I’ve been around long enough to know that’s what happens in football sometimes.

“I am certainly not going to dwell on it and, knowing the group of players we have got, I am sure they won’t either. They will want to put things right.

“We will go again this weekend and we will keep the belief and keep the spirits high.”

Peaks watched this weekend’s opponents draw come back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with Ware on Tuesday night.

And while he knows a plan will be ready for the game, he insists Diamonds will approach it the same as any other.

“We will have a gameplan in place for it, of course,” he added.

“But our boys know how we like to play and we will go there looking for the win just like we have done in every game this season.

“It was disappointing last Saturday but it’s easy to forget just how good we were against St Ives as well. That was the standard and that’s what we need to replicate.”
