Peaks a happy man as Diamonds' keep up their fine form
Andy Peaks was a happy man as AFC Rushden & Diamonds' impressive form continued with a 2-0 victory at Ashford Town (Middx).
First-half goals from Tom Lorraine and Ryan Robbins proved to be enough as Diamonds made it three wins in a row to move into the second automatic promotion place in the Evo-Stik South League East and to within three points of unbeaten leaders Moneyfields.
Diamonds have now tasted defeat just once in their last 11 league matches and boss Peaks was delighted with another good away-day.
“I was really pleased with that,” the Diamonds boss said.
“They have had a bit of a blip recently but they have been missing some players and they were back for this game and they are one of the highest scorers in the league.
“But we set things up right and we took a couple of early chances to get in front and, from there, I thought we managed the game really well.
“It was another great win and I think we are in a perfect position.
“I have always said that if we are in and around the top six and seven around Christmas then it would give us a good chance to push on.
“The squad is getting better and what’s just important to me is the fact that we are moving in the right direction on that front.”
Peaks, meanwhile, had words of praise for strikers Lorraine and Robbins who have now scored the last six goals Diamonds have hit on the road between them.
“They were both a threat, they both scored a goal and they did well for us,” Peaks added.
“It’s unfortunate for Ben Diamond to be honest because he is clearly a good player who is being kept out by the other two at the moment.
“But it was pleasing to see the two strikers score. We had the two chances and they took them, which put us in a really good position.”
Diamonds are back in action on Tuesday night when they take on fifth-placed Cambridge City, who are just a point behind them, in a big game at Hayden Road.
