Peaks: Diamonds didn't hit the high standards

All the goals came in the first half with Joel Gyasi bringing Diamonds level at 1-1 but Egham grabbed what proved to be the winner before the break with Peaks’ team unable to find a way through in the second period.

Despite the loss, the damage to the Evo-Stik South League East table was limited as second-placed Beaconsfield Town also lost to ensure Diamonds remain three points clear at the summit.

And Peaks believes ‘a kick up the backside’ might not be a bad thing for his team as they now look to bounce back.

“We weren’t at our best but we still could have taken a point from the game,” the Diamonds boss said.

“Our real strength during the run was our defending and we didn’t defend well enough for their two goals.

“We gave it a go but we didn’t hit the high standards we have set for ourselves.

“We didn’t make the right decisions and football can be like that sometimes.

“We haven’t got a good record at Egham in the games we have played there and they were always going to make it hard for us.

“The good thing that has come out of it all is that not too much damage was done.

“AFC Dunstable won but the other teams at the top dropped points as well so, thankfully, it’s just a case of another game being gone. On the flip side, it means we have missed a chance to move further clear.

“Now it’s all about us bouncing back and I am sure we well.

“Sometimes, as you go into the run-in, the players getting a kick up the backside isn’t a bad thing.

“We have had a reality check but we haven’t lost any ground. Now we have to focus on coming back from it.”

Diamonds’ next match is a big one as they entertain fifth-placed Hayes & Yeading United at Hayden Road on Saturday.
