Peaks delighted as Diamonds get the job done

A second-half header from Jack Ashton was enough for the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One South Diamonds to see off Premier Division outfit Coalville Town at the Dog & Duck.

And while Peaks admits a play-off place in the league is his main aim for this season, he was pleased to see his team get through another stage of the Trophy and book their place in Monday’s second qualifying round draw.

The Diamonds boss said: “We are delighted to get through. It’s a great competition that we wanted to stay in.

“It gives you an opportunity to pit your wits against teams from a higher level which we have done today and it’s a bit more money for the club as well.

“We want to do well in the league and try to finish in and around the play-offs but in the cups, you only get one chance and we did the job in front of our own fans.”

As far as the game itself was concerned, Peaks felt his team could have performed even better than they did.

But he was happy with the way his defence minimised the threat from Coalville once Ashton had headed home the only goal of the game on the hour.

“I thought we could have played better than we did but you always take a win,” Peaks added.

“They played how I expected after watching them the other night and I felt that if we were on our game then we could beat them and that’s how it panned out.

“It opened up in the second half and I was disappointed in the first half because I felt we could have passed the ball a lot better.

“We asked the question at half-time whether we could pass the ball better and play at a higher tempo and we did that.

“We got the goal and then we had a couple of chances to kill the game but we didn’t and inevitably, it meant they will have a spell but we dealt with it when it came.”
