Boothroyd in confident mood as Cobblers grab share of the spoils at Morecambe

Town trailed with two minutes to play at the Globe Arena after Jack Redshaw’s 14th goal of the season looked to have sealed a 10th defeat for the team on their travels.

But skipper Kelvin Langmead provided a late leveller with his eighth goal of the season to seal a 1-1 draw that keeps the push for automatic promotion as strong as ever.

Results elsewhere mean Northampton are still fourth in npower League Two, two points behind Port Vale, who lose again, at Bristol Rovers, and three off Burton, who went second with a win at Aldershot.

“If we keep taking points away from home and win our home games we will get automatic promotion,” said a confident Boothroyd.

“It’s about keeping our nerve and making sure we keep a cool head, not getting emotional because Burton have won or other results have happened elsewhere.

“We don’t need to worry about them and we don’t need to worry about Port Vale, we just need to do our homework and keep doing what we’ve been doing.

“I think that was as good an away performance as we’ve had - we were solid, we were resilient and we were tough.

“We gave away a poor goal that I’m irritated about, but I’ll discuss that later on with the lads because we didn’t deal with it.

“We have to learn from that.

“We hit the post four times in the game and when you’re doing that you’re going to win more than you lose and you never know, we might even pick up three points away from home at some point.”

Although no official attendance figures were given, the Cobblers were well backed at Morecambe and the supporters’ efforts, for a midweek fixture three hours from Northampton and with the team having lost nine times away from home, were greatly appreciated by Boothroyd.

“I thank the supporters for following us all the way up here on a cold Tuesday night,” he said.

“They were noisy all night and I was happy we could send them home with something to smile about.”
