Thrapston head to table-topping Oakham United tomorrow (Saturday) to face a team who have started the new campaign with four wins from as many matches.

But Ian Walker’s team are not doing too badly themselves in Division One of the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League.

Having opened up with a 4-3 defeat at Whitworth, Thrapston have won their last two as a 3-1 success at Irchester United last Sunday was followed by a 4-0 victory at Burton Park Wanderers on Tuesday night.

And the manager insists confidence is high ahead of a tough trip this weekend.

“They couldn’t have asked for a better start and we go to their ground with them sitting at the top with four wins from four matches,” Walker said.

“It’s always difficult for us at the start of the season as, because of the cricket (they share Chancery Lane with the town’s cricket club) we always have away matches to begin with.

“But we are going into it on the back of two very good performances.

“As far as timing is concerned, it couldn’t be better for us. We can look forward to it with confidence.

“The second-half display at Irchester was very good. They have had a great start themselves but we knocked the stuffing out of them.

“And then, on Tuesday, I thought we were superb at Burton.

“We pretty much dominated for the whole 90 minutes and we scored four goals. It was a great performance from the lads.”

Elsewhere at the weekend, Wanderers will look to bounce back against Whittlesey Athletic while Rushden & Higham United, fresh from their first win of the season at Melton Town last weekend, entertain Stewarts & Lloyds, who are still seeking their first points of the campaign.

Melton are the visitors to Kiln Park to take on Raunds Town tomorrow (Saturday), Irchester travel to Olney Town and Whitworth have home advantage against Buckingham Town.

There is also a full programme of Division One action over Tuesday and Wednesday next week.
