Stewarts & Lloyds have brought in Tommy Berwick as they chase promotion from ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Division One.
Berwick was last season part of the AFC Rushden & Diamonds squad that powered to the Premier Division title but left the club last month for personal reasons.
S&L boss John Cairns explained: “I think Tommy just got a bit fed up with football.
“Our chairman contacted him and a couple of the lads helped persuade him to come here until the end of the season.
“He’s a great signing for us.
“Tommy is a proven goalscorer and will give us that competition for places we need.
“We have a lot of games coming up and we need to strengthen.”
The Foundrymen, nine points behind second-placed ON Chenecks with four games in hand after their midweek match with Long Buckby was postponed, head to Buckingham Town tomorrow (Saturday).
That’s followed by a home date with runaway leaders Peterborough Sports at Occupation Road on Tuesday night.
Sports are currently the only team in the English league system with a 100 per-cent record.
They have won all 21 matches, scoring 95 goals and conceding just nine.
Cairns accepts Sports will go up as champions, but added: “They are not invincible.
“But they are a very good team on a great run of form. They must be thinking they can’t lose.
“But they aren’t thrashing everyone 6-0. When they play sides around the top four or five, the games are closer and that will give the lads some confidence.”
S&L will also take confidence from the struggle Sports had with Northants Combination side Weldon United in the semi-finals of the NFA Junior Cup last weekend.
Sports edged out Weldon on penalties and now meet Netherton United, who shocked Raunds Town in the other last-four-tie.
Cairns added: “A few of the lads know Weldon players so we will find out a bit about Sports from them, but they obviously have quality throughout the side.
“I would like to think we will give them a good game on Tuesday night.”
Elsewhere in Division One this weekend, fifth-placed Rushden & Higham United take on local rivals Whitworth at Hayden Road.
And there is another derby at Latimer Park as Burton Park Wanderers entertain Raunds.
Irchester United face Blackstones at Alfred Street while Thrapston Town also have home advantage as they play Woodford United at Chancery Lane.
