'˜No love lost' as Doughboys and Ar Tarn gear up for derby day

It's derby day in the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division this weekend as Wellingborough Town take on Desborough Town at the Dog & Duck.

And it has got the makings of being a decent encounter with the Doughboys currently flying under Stuart Goosey while Ar Tarn remain in the upper reaches of the table.

Wellingborough made it three wins in a row without conceding a goal on Tuesday night as strike from Adam Speight and a Jack Wisniewski penalty secured a 2-0 success over Kirby Muxloe.

And, after his team suffered a 5-3 defeat at the Waterworks Field back in September, the Doughboys boss insists there is “no love lost” between the two local rivals.

Goosey said: “It’s a similar situation to the reverse fixture at the start of the season because both teams were in good form then and I think everyone was expecting a good game and it was. There were eight goals and we were disappointed not to get something from it.

“There is no love lost and it should be another interesting game. Our players are buzzing and that’s what happens when you are winning games.

“They have set themselves some new targets for the end of the season and, at the moment, they are getting what they deserve for the effort they are putting in.

“It wasn’t pretty on Tuesday because we had to match Kirby’s physical approach. But we did that and we got another win, even if it was ugly.”

Desborough, meanwhile, could move level on points with third-placed Yaxley if they are successful at the Dog & Duck.

Boss Chris Bradshaw was delighted with the response of his team last weekend as they hit back from their UCL Knockout Cup semi-final loss to Wisbech Town with a 5-0 demolition of strugglers Harrowby United.

But he knows it will be a tougher examination tomorrow.

“It was a great response,” Bradshaw said.

“I asked them to go out and dictate the game and get an early goal because we needed to get over the cup loss quickly and, when you are struggling like Harrowby, the last thing you want to do is concede early.

“We got a couple of goals and took our foot off the gas but then we were very good in the second half.

“But we know it will be tough this weekend. Wellingborough have been in good form and our games with them are usually close.

“It’s got the makings of an interesting and tough game. I am sure it be a big battle.”

Joint-manager Shaun Sparrow says Rothwell Corinthians are looking forward to testing themselves in their next two UCL Premier Division matches.

Corinthians face back-to-back clashes with Deeping Rangers as they make the trip to Lincolnshire this weekend before hosting the second-placed side at Sergeants Lawn a week tomorrow.

Corinthians head into the game on the back of a 2-1 success at Sleaford Town last Saturday, a result that left Sparrow delighted.

“It was a big game for us last weekend because we felt we were better than them when we drew with them at home so we wanted to prove it,” the joint-boss said.

“It was a good performance in tough conditions against a physical side who didn’t really play the way we like to play.

“It was nice to see our boys stand up to the battle, we were up for the fight and we got the result we wanted.

“And that has given us something of a free roll of the dice for the next couple of games. Deeping’s form has been outstanding, I have heard all about it but I haven’t seen them play yet.

“So we are looking forward to testing ourselves in the next two matches.

“We have proven we can match the best in the division in the two games we’ve had with Peterborough Sports and we will look to do the same again.”
