New challenge for Steelmen as they chase back-to-back wins

The Steelmen breathed new life into their bid for survival in the Vanarama National League North with a dramatic and crucial 2-1 success at Worcester City last weekend.

Duane Courtney headed Corby in front but they looked like they would have to settle for a draw when Shaun Donnellan levelled late on for the hosts.

However, Worcester goalkeeper Ethan Ross spilled Kalern Thomas’ cross into his own net to hand Wright’s men a last-minute winner.

The victory, along with the other results, ensured the battle to avoid the drop could not be tighter with just one point now separating the Steelmen, who are third-from-bottom, from Bradford Park Avenue, who are 15th.

Wright labelled last weekend’s game as “must win” and his players delivered.

Now he has challenged them to make it two in a row as they try to end a dismal run at on their own pitch.

“We have the chance to get back-to-back wins for the first time this season and that’s got to be our aim,” the Corby boss said.

“The incentive is there for the players to go and break that duck. That’s the next challenge for us.

“Gainsborough haven’t been in great form recently and the results last weekend have dragged them into it a little bit,

“But they have managed to get on a couple of good runs during the season and, aside from the first six matches when we were unbeaten but didn’t win back-to-back matches, we haven’t been able to do that.

“If we can do it this weekend then it will probably make a difference to how the league table looks but, more importantly, it will give the boys an even bigger lift.”

Wright says his team are “trying to find the right balance” when it comes to how they approach home matches as they try to arrest a worrying run at Steel Park.

“Last season we were able to play expansive football at home but it has been harder to do that this time, simply because it is a bigger, harder and tougher league,” he added.

“And the big difference in this league is that if you give your opponents a chance, you will be punished for it. We are getting punished for every mistake we make.

“We are trying to find the right balance between being negative in our approach while also trying to ensure that we retain an attacking ethos.

“Last weekend was probably the best example of that so far but this will be a new game and a new approach.”
