Mills: Steelmen must be ready to battle it out

Gary Mills has warned his Corby Town players they must be ready to battle in their bid to avoid the drop in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division.

The Steelmen claimed a 3-3 draw against Ashton United at Steel Park on Saturday as Mills picked up his first point since taking over as manager.

The stalemate ended a run of four successive league defeats but Corby remain at the bottom of the table and are six points adrift of safety.

The Steelmen squad, which has received a makeover with Mills making a number of new signings, are now preparing for tomorrow’s Integro League Cup first-round clash at AFC Rushden & Diamonds.

But two more key home dates in the league are coming up with the Steelmen hosting Barwell next Saturday before taking on Rushall Olympic a week on Wednesday.

“It is a key period for us,” Mill said.

“If the lads show the same commitment, desire and quality, because they did play some decent stuff at times, then I am sure we will put some more points on the board.

“We have a way we want to play and that’s with the ball on the floor.

“But when you are in a battle like we are, there will be times when you have to abandon that and fight for the points and if we have to do that, then we will.”

Mills, meanwhile, is hopeful of making further additions to his squad this week and he paid tribute to the club’s board for backing him in the changes he has made.

“There may be one or two this week, fingers crossed,” Mills said when asked about any new arrivals.

“I’d like to thank the club and the board for backing me with the players we are bringing in.

“It’s a huge help to know you have got the backing of the board to try to change things.”
