Gary Mills has only one thing in his mind and that is to bring success to Corby Town.

The vastly-experienced 58-year-old was confirmed as the Steelmen’s new manager at the weekend and immediately set his sets on a promotion push in the Southern League Division One Central next season.

Mills arrives at Steel Park with a highly impressive CV both as a player and a manager.

As a player, he made over 700 senior appearances with his highlight being when he was part of Nottingham Forest’s European Cup winning team in 1980.

As a manager, he won the Southern League Midland Division title with Grantham Town in 1998 and went on to lead Tamworth to promotion from Conference North in 2009.

He took charge of York City in 2010 and, in the 2011-12 campaign, led the Minstermen back into the Football League after they defeated Luton Town at Wembley in the Conference play-off final.

He also managed Gateshead and Wrexham before returning for a second spell at York, which came to an end in September 2017.

Now he is back in the game at Corby, who missed out on promotion in the play-off final a year ago while they were in contention again last season before it was declared null and void due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

But Mills is hoping he will be the man to finally lead them over the line and back into Step 3 football.

“I have had a few conversations now with the owner and the chairman and they have made it clear where they want to take Corby Town, which was important to me,” Mills said.

“They want me to be the one to take them to where they want to get to and I am delighted to be the manager to do that.

“I am excited. It’s been a while since I have been in the dugout and it’s great to be back.

“I am under no illusions of what is expected, I have been asked to come in here and take them to where they want to get to.

“Obviously, it’s always one season at a time. But the aim will be to get out of this league this season and I have come here to do that.

“Everything is here, the infrastructure is here, the ground is tremendous and the ambition of the owner, the chairman and everyone at the club is obvious to me. It just feels right.

“I will do it my way. I will do it the way I have done it for numerous years now, with some success.

“I think everybody connected with the club will see the way I work and what I like around the club I manage. The most important thing for me is that I get the right players out there to want to go and do what I have come here to do.

“I am looking forward to it. It’s exciting. It’s a weird time as we all know but we just have to get ready for the start of the season.

“We have just got one thing in mind and that is to bring success here.”

Mills will have Darron Gee alongside him in the Steel Park dugout after the duo enjoyed success together at Grantham, Tamworth and York.

“That’s important to me because I have someone with me who knows how I work,” Mills added.

“We have been apart for a few years and I have had Darren Caskey with me, who is a fantastic assistant, but unfortunately he lives up north so I have gone back to Darron to help me here.

“I have the right people around me so my disciplines, my principles and philosophy of how I want the game to be played will be stamped on Corby straight away.”
