MIDWEEK SPORT '“ Diamonds hit four at Belper but Poppies have to fight back for a draw
AFC Rushden & Diamonds picked up their third win in a row and made it seven games without defeat in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One South with a fine 4-1 success at Belper Town.
Diamonds made a fine start when Nic Evangelinos slotted home after good work from Taylor Orosz.
Belper hit back almost immediately when they were awarded a penalty and Ruben Wiggins-Thomas converted from 12 yards.
But Diamonds did regain the lead before the half time when Lewis Wilson scored his first goal for the club when he finished off Nabil Shariff’s cross.
And it only got better after the break. Orosz made it 3-1 when his cross from 15 yards missed everyone and found the net.
The win was rounded off by Liam Dolman who blasted home following a corner.
Diamonds will now look to make it three wins in a week when they host Basford United at the weekend.
Kettering Town produced a fine second-half fightback but are still waiting for their first home win of the season in the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division after they drew 2-2 with St Neots Town at Latimer Park.
The Poppies produced a poor first-half performance and found themselves 2-0 down at the break.
James Hall’s cross deceived Dean Snedker to give St Neots the lead and things were looking precarious for Marcus Law when Sam Mulready nodded home the second just before half-time.
But the introductions of Liam Canavan and Aaron O’Connor made a big difference after the break.
O’Connor pulled one back with a composed finish and then Wilson Carvalho made it 2-2 after being sent through on goal.
But, despite their late pressure, the Poppies were unable to find a winner.
Kettering will attempt to get their first home league win of the season again on Saturday when they host Weymouth.
