Tommy Wright has urged his young players to “put on a show” when Corby Town get their pre-season programme under way this evening.
The Steelmen boss will take an under-23 side up the A1 to take on a Newcastle United team in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the Barclays Premier League club’s training ground (6.30pm).
Wright’s squad reported back for pre-season training at the weekend and he is keen to hold the vast majority of his first-team squad back for the friendly at Oadby Town in a week’s time.
But the likes of Ben Milnes, Greg Mills, Connor Kennedy and Kalern Thomas will play today while summer signing Ashley Sammons will make his first appearance in a Corby shirt.
The rest will be made up of younger players including some from the new crop heading into the academy that Wright will be in control of this season.
And he is hoping the youngsters take their chance to impress.
“I am expecting Newcastle’s team to be made up of under-21 and under-18 players and it is a massive game for our young lads against a huge Premier League club,” Wright said.
“It’s a chance for some of the first-team boys to get some minutes in their legs and any player would rather be playing than training.
“As a club, it’s a chance for us to try to build a relationship with Newcastle.
“It will be a good fitness exercise because Newcastle will keep the ball well. But I really want our boys to put on a show.”
