A ‘festival of football’ beckons for Corby Town supporters again this summer after the club announced the line-up for their Steel Park Cup.

Leeds United, Newcastle United and PSV Eindhoven will join the Steelmen for the competition which will take place on Saturday and Sunday July 23-24, writes Jim Lyon.

Last year PSV took the title in the four-way event which also featured sides representing Liverpool and FC Porto as well as the
hosts.

It is something that will excite supporters and players alike according to Corby boss Tommy Wright.

And he also feels the new cost of tickets for the event are likely to attract fans to Steel Park.

“We learned a lot from last season – more off-field than on it,” Wright said.

“The club have thought about it a lot and I think the pricing is more suitable this time and holds real value for money.

“It really is a weekend festival of football.

“It is a great thing for the fans – and our players – to watch.

“In my academy I’ve got 15 Lionel Messis and 15 Cristiano Ronaldos – or at least that’s what they think.

“But they will get the chance to watch some really good lads close up – a lot of which won’t make it into the professional game.

“It will be a great chance for them to see what these players can do.

“The standard was frightening at times last year and it is a great thing for everyone to be able to watch at Steel Park.

“I really think it is the sort of thing that will get people excited.”

The cup will take place in a league format, with each side playing once per day.

Teams will be awarded three points for a win and one point for a draw.

Goal difference will be the deciding factor if two sides are level at the end of the weekend.

Supporters will enjoy two matches on both days with tickets costing £15.

A weekend ticket is also available for £25 while Steelmen season ticket holders will gain free entry on both days.

PSV will face Leeds United in the opening match of the tournament at 12pm on the Saturday, with Corby Town hosting Newcastle United at 3.30pm.

The following day Newcastle will face PSV at midday before Corby and Leeds play each other at 3.30pm.
