Title is still in our reach, says Diamonds boss Peaks

AFC Rushden & Diamonds boss Andy Peaks is refusing to write off his side’s chances of winning the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One Central championship.

Diamonds head to struggling Leighton Town on Saturday in the final play-off place.

They were top of the table until a run of four straight defeats – and Peaks isn’t ruling them out of a return to the summit.

Diamonds trail leaders Royston Town by seven points after last Saturday’s goalless draw with Northwood Town at the Dog and Duck stopped the rot.

And Peaks said: “If we win our last six games, we won’t be far away from winning the title.

“It’s definitely not impossible.

“Teams around us are dropping points and if we win our next game that will give us so much confidence going into the last five games of the season.”

Diamonds are without skipper Richard Bunting for the rest of the season, but Peaks reports Tom Liversedge and Nabil Sharif were back in training this week and could feature during the run-in.

Liversedge was the four-goal hero for Diamonds when they walloped Leighton 7-1 at the Dog & Duck earlier this season and Peaks said: “We have players coming back at the right time.

“We will be stronger.”
