Corby Town moved back to the top of the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division, for 24 hours at least, thanks to a fine 4-2 success at Hitchin Town.
The Steelmen’s success was enough to see them leapfrog previous leaders Weymouth on goal difference, although the Terras and the other teams at the top of the table are due to be in action tomorrow (Tuesday) night.
Nonetheless, Tommy Wright’s side once again emphasised their title credentials by picking up a seventh win in the last eight games and maintaining an impressive unbeaten run.
Boss Wright named an unchanged team to the one that started the 1-1 draw with Hungerford Town at Steel Park on Saturday.
And they got off to the perfect start by taking a 2-0 lead inside the first 16 minutes.
Wilson Carvalho made it two goals in as many games by tapping in at the far post following a corner and that advantage was doubled when Elliott Chamberlain nodded home.
It proved to be an end-to-end game in the first half and Hitchin pulled one back on 23 minutes when Dan Webb poked the ball home.
Spencer Weir-Daley shot wide before the break but it only took the Steelmen three minutes to extend their lead after the restart when Cleveland Taylor curled home a free-kick.
Jonny McNamara sent a shot onto the roof of Paul Walker’s net as the hosts tried to respond.
But the Steelmen made the game safe with 15 minutes to go as Edi Appleton fired home following another corner.
Greg Mills was denied by the home goalkeeper and Hitchin pulled another back through substitute Simon Martin with six minutes remaining.
There was still time for McNamara to hit the crossbar but Corby saw things out to ensure they returned to the summit.
