Alex Meecham’s goal sent Corby Town crashing to a 1-0 defeat at Colwyn Bay as the Blue Square Bet North relegation dogfight took a new twist in Wales.

Chris Plummer brought defender Carl Piergianni straight back into the starting line-up following a three-match ban while Paul Malone and Jordan Ivey-Ward were both named on the bench having missed the 2-2 draw with Bishop’s Stortford due to illness.

Josh Moreman missed out after suffering a shin injury in that game while Greg Kaziboni was again absent from the Steelmen squad.

But it all started badly for the visitors as they found themselves 1-0 down after 16minutes.

Paul Walker tipped James Ellison’s free-kick onto the bar but Corby failed to clear and Alex Meecham scrambled the ball home.

The hosts continued to have the better of things after that, although Ryan Semple and Avelino Vieira both tested home goalkeeper Chris Sanna as the Steelmen looked to respond.

Walker saved well from Meecham both before and after half-time but Corby put the pressure on in the second half with Piergianni heading wide and Semple sending a free-kick over.

But they were unable to find an equaliser as Colwyn Bay held on to leave themselves just four points behind the Steelmen with two games in hand.

Steelmen line-up: Walker, Crowe, Jelleyman, Webb, Galinski, Piergianni, Semple, Wedderburn, Vieira, McGowan, Ives. Subs: Malone, Ivey-Ward, Richardson, Manga, Bryan.
