Sparkling Diamonds hit five on the road

AFC Rushden & Diamonds produced one of their best displays of the season so far as they claimed a superb 5-1 victory at Needham Market in the Evo-Stik League South Premier Division Central.

They opened the scoring on 26 minutes when Declan Rogers’ effort was parried away and Joel Gyasi drilled it back across goal for Ben Diamond to poke into an empty net.

It wasn’t until the first minute of the second half that the lead was doubled and this time it was Diamond who was the provider as he raced through and unselfishly played it across to Bowen who tapped home.

The hosts hit back almost immediately when Daniel Morphew halved the deficit with a header from a corner.

But, from there, Diamonds raced away with things.

Rogers made it 3-1 when his superb left-footed strike from 25 yards found the top corner and then substitute Tom Lorraine was on hand to head home a Rogers delivery to make it four.

And an excellent day for Andy Peaks’ team was completed in the final minute when young loanee Albie Hopkins got in behind the home defence and clipped a shot into the far corner.
