Andy Peaks knows AFC Rushden & Diamonds will be in for a “sterner test” when they head to Northampton Spencer for their latest pre-season friendly tonight (Tuesday).
Diamonds got their summer programme under way with a 2-0 success at ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Division One side Rushden & Higham United at the weekend.
Now they are gearing up for the clash with last season’s Division One champions and the club where Peaks’ managerial career started.
Tonight’s match is followed by another step up at the weekend when Diamonds make the trip to Ryman League Premier Division outfit Enfield Town.
And Peaks, who is looking forward to returning to his old club this evening, is expecting another good workout for his players.
“It will be a sterner test for us but that’s what we want,” the Diamonds boss said.
“They went up from the UCL Division One last season and they will have some decent players so it should be another good workout.
“From a personal point of view, I am pleased we are going over there to play them. I have a good relationship with the people there.
“They gave me the chance to learn my trade in management and I had some good times with them.
“I said that I would like us to play a friendly against them this summer and I am pleased we are doing it.
“It is another step up from the weekend and then we have another step up again when we go to Enfield on Saturday.
“We are gradually building things up and that’s how it should be.”
