AFC Rushden & Diamonds slipped to a second defeat in a row as they were beaten 2-0 at title-chasing Witton Albion.
The loss, which came three days after a 2-1 reverse at Market Drayton Town, is another blow to Diamonds’ play-off hopes in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One South as they remain in sixth spot, although they still have two games in hand on fifth-placed Basford United who are a point clear.
Andy Peaks made two changes to the starting line-up with Brad Harris, who returned from a two-match ban, recalled while Tom Lorraine was restored in attack.
Diamonds endured a poor start as Witton, who moved to within three points of leaders Shaw Lane with this win, took the lead through Steve Tames after just seven minutes.
Nabil Shariff went closest for the visitors in the first half when he forced a goal-line clearance.
But Witton doubled their advantage on 70 minutes when Anthony Brown got the final touch following a corner.
Shariff saw an effort pushed wide as Diamonds tried to find a way back into the game.
But they were unable to find a goal and will now look to hit back when they host struggling Northwich Victoria at the Dog & Duck on Saturday.
