Having suffered a shock 4-1 loss at Dorchester Town last week, the Poppies made no mistake against bottom side Gosport Borough at Latimer Park as goals from Aaron O’Connor and Brett Solkhon secured a 2-0 victory.

The win was enough to put Kettering back into fourth spot, just a point behind second-placed Weymouth and five off leaders King’s Lynn Town with Law’s team having games in hand on both.

And the Poppies manager said: “We are always happy with a clean sheet and in those freezing conditions, it was just a case of grinding it out. It was a job done.

“Their goalkeeper and their centre-halves made it difficult for us but it was was about not letting that result last week manifest, it was about the response this week and the energy levels and the lads gave us what we needed.

“It could have been more but I think we limited them to one shot, which Paul White dealt with and if we keep doing that whoever the side is, it bodes well.”

Kettering are certainly enjoying their home comforts this season.

The victory over Gosport was their seventh win in eight league matches at Latimer Park while the other was a 0-0 draw with fellow high-fliers Slough Town.

They have conceded just one goal in the league on home soil and Law added: “It has been the foundation, it’s what we have reversed from last year.

“I think this is more what the fans are used to because the club have done very well here since they moved to the ground.

“I have to give credit to the staff because we had to have a stronger mental strength. We had a soft underbelly last season and that was why the home form was poor.

“The staff made us strong in pre-season and it’s the reason why we are in with a shout because our home form will carry us through.

“We have some big games to deal with and we are talking to players to bring a bit of extra strength in with the aim being to try to kick on over Christmas.”

The Poppies are back in action on Tuesday night when they make the short trip to Banbury United.
