The midfielder’s first goal of the campaign couldn’t have come at a better time as he struck in stoppage-time to earn the Steelmen a 1-1 draw at Alfreton Town last weekend.

The point moved Tommy Wright’s team back out of the relegation zone ahead of the home clash with play-off contenders Nuneaton Town at Steel Park on Saturday.

The Steelmen are a point clear of Brackley Town who sit third from bottom and they also have two games in hand on their Northamptonshire rivals while also having one in hand on the FC United of Manchester, who sit just above them.

The draw at Alfreton came after Corby had beaten Tamworth 2-0 at home a week earlier.

And, with seven points coming from the last 12 available, it has marked an upturn in fortunes as they bid to avoid the drop.

Milnes feels the Steelmen have become more “solid” in recent matches and he remains confident that they will be safe come the end of April.

“I definitely believe we will stay up, especially with the way the results have gone in the past few weeks,” he said.

“We have hit form at the right time and now we have to string a few more good performances and wins together.

“We just want to keep improving and keep progressing.

“We have started to look a lot more solid as a team recently and the results have followed.

“It’s another tough game on Saturday but we will go into it with confidence.

“We have found a bit of form, we drew 0-0 at their place and we should be feeling confident about getting another positive result.”

In his post-match analysis of the draw at Alfreton, boss Wright admitted he has been giving Milnes “a bit of stick” for his lack of goals this season.

The midfielder confirmed that was the case but he is now hoping that his first strike of the campaign will bring with it a few more before it’s all over.

When asked about his manager’s comments, Milnes joked: “He hasn’t shut up about it!

“But I was really pleased to score the goal, it’s been a long time coming.

“The manager has certainly been letting me know about it when comes to getting goals and, now I have got off the mark, hopefully there will be more to come.”

The Steelmen’s home clash with Nuneaton on Saturday is followed by a re-arranged trip to Bradford Park Avenue next Wednesday night.
