We could have nicked it, says Poppies boss Law

Kettering Town boss Marcus Law saw his team claim a point on the road as they drew 0-0 at Hitchin Town

Neither side could find a breakthrough at Top Field with the Poppies having a second-half effort from Aaron O’Connor ruled out for offside.

The draw kept Kettering in second place in the Evo-Stik South League Premier, three points behind leaders King’s Lynn Town with a game in hand.

But boss Law felt his team could have nicked a precious three points late in the game.

When asked whether it was a good point for his team, the Poppies boss replied: “It was something we were talking about after the game.

“The truth is, I set a target for the players for this week and we are still on course to hit that target. I don’t mind how we hit it, as long as we do.

“After 75 minutes, I would have taken a 0-0 draw but in the last 10 minutes, I felt we did enough to nick it.

“If we had done, it wouldn’t have been a fair result but when you are chasing titles and promotions, it’s games when you might not deserve a win but still get one that go a long way to deciding things.

“The decision-making from players who are still learning could have been better at times but we are not overly disappointed.

“We were up against a team who haven’t lost at home since August and who are enjoying a real surge in form. I have no doubt they will pull points off other teams at home.

“If we talk about winning our home games and not losing away then we are on course for this week. And if we do what we need to do at home in the next two matches then we will be happy.”

The next game for the Poppies is on Tuesday night and it’s a big one as Hereford come to Latimer Park.

The title favourites are in FA Trophy action against National League side Dagenham & Redbridge today (Sunday) having lost 2-0 to Fleetwood Town in their FA Cups second-round replay on Thursday night.

Hereford are six points behind Kettering and have four matches in hand but Law is focusing solely on his own team as they look to defend their unbeaten home record in the league.

“We are concentrating on going about our business and if we do that then we will always fancy our chances against anyone,” he added.

“It will be interesting to see what they do with their team selection today but knowing their manager like I do, I know he will be coming to our place on Tuesday looking to win.

“But we will concentrate on ourselves. We have had a tough game this weekend and we need to make sure we recover well and be ready to go again on Tuesday.”
