Kettering Town returned to winning ways in the Calor League Division One Central as second-half goals from Steve Kinniburgh and Lewis Wilson sealed a much-needed 2-0 success at Ashford Town (Middx).
Following the departures of Ashley and Dave Deeney and Nathan Fox during the week, the Poppies added last season’s player-of-the-year Henry Eze to their squad ahead of the clash.
The centre-half started alongside fellow new boy Chimdi Akubuine while another new face, Luke Knight, who has joined from Biggleswade Town, was on the bench.
The Poppies’ cause was helped after 35 minutes when the home side’s Alex Duffy saw red for a second bookable offence after two fouls on Jonathon Thorpe.
Chris Logan hit the post for Kettering but the first period ended goalless.
However, the Poppies did find a breakthrough on the hour when Kinniburgh’s 20-yard effort found its way through a crowded area and went in off the post.
They wrapped up their victory 16 minutes from the end when Wilson fired home a low strike and not even the late dismissal of Jake Newman, also for two bookable offences, could take the gloss off a good day.
Poppies line-up: Horton, Thorpe, Akubine, Logan, Eze, Kinniburgh, Piercewright, Newman, Gooding, Fuller, Wilson. Subs: Knight, Hamilton, Tricks, Sage.
