DEREK BROWN will be playing for Kettering Town next season.
The 29-year-old central defender was club captain at St Albans City last season and, ironically, was sent off when the Poppies beat his former side 2-0 at Rockingham Road in the Ryman League Premier Division.
Brown was unable to attend the first pre-season training session last night as his wife has recently given birth. But Kevin Wilson is expecting him to link up with his new team-mates tomorrow.
The Poppies manager said: "Derek is a big centre-half and will certainly bring some strength to our defence.
"He is a player I have looked at for a while and I am delighted to say that he will be with us next season."
Wilson, meanwhile, put his players through a gruelling three-hour build-up in Broughton.
Among those training were Hednesford Town striker Mark Danks – who Wilson has admitted he is interested in signing – and Drew Roberts who scored 24 goals for Bedford Town last season.
Former Northampton Town midfielder Roy Hunter was also put through his paces while recent signing Steve Corry was also on hand.
And the Poppies manager said that while there is still a lot of talking to be done with some players about putting pen to paper he was delighted by the way the initial get-together went.
Wilson added: "It has been a tough first session for the lads but they have worked hard. It is good to be back.
"One thing I knew last season when I came here was that the fitness levels needed to go up and that is why we are going to get it right from the first day this time.
"There are a few players who have come along. Drew Roberts has trained with us. But I will continue to talk to him about what his future plans are."
Irchester United returned to pre-season training at Alfred Street last night.
The new managerial team of Steve Whitney and Iori Jenkins are running the rule over a number of possible signings during their pre-season programme.
It includes trips to Kimberley Town on July 31, Southwell City on August 3 and Langford on August 10. They are also competing in the Umbro International Football Festival in Manchester on August 7 and 8.
Burton Park Wanderers are looking for a new manager-coach for the forthcoming season. The club will start training for the new campaign on Tuesday.
Anyone wishing to apply for the job can write to Mr R Patrick, 16 Church Street, Burton Latimer, NN15 5LU.
