A brave effort was not quite enough for Kettering Town as they were edged out 1-0 by Boston United in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.
It was an even first half with Kettering more than holding their own while neither goalkeeper was seriously tested.
However, it was the hosts who took the lead after 66 minutes.
There were claims for handball in the build-up to the goal but the referee allowed the game to continue and Ben Fairclough rifled home.
Laurie Walker made a good save with his legs soon after while, at the other end, Ed Palmer saw a shot tipped over the bar.
Boston’s goalkeeper was kept busy as the Poppies searched for an equaliser but it also needed Walker to make a fine stop at the other end to keep Kettering in it.
But another goal didn’t come as the Pilgrims booked their place in Monday’s draw.
Poppies: Walker, Ifil, Lamplough, Palmer, Gerring, Radford, Burns, King, Gele, Byerley, Mayo. Subs: Hervel, Blazio, Griffiths.
