Maison excited by duo signing

Kettering Town have completed two big signings – and there is the promise of more to come.

Both Steven Meechan and Jerel Ifil signed two-year deals with the Poppies over the weekend as Morell Maison continues to put his plans into place for the new season.

And the boss is delighted to have persuaded two quality performers to pledge their futures to the club.

Maison said: “Stevie Meechan has a huge future and I think we are very lucky to have signed him.

“Why Motherwell released him I don’t know!

“He has such quality and will be a massive asset for us. He’s certainly one for the future but he will do an excellent job for us now.

“Stevie is definitely a League One player and he has an unbelievable pedigree.

“The big decision for him was whether to leave Scottish football. He decided to come to us and, when he’s settled, I think he will be a big, big player for us.

“Jerel brings so much to our club.

“He’s a no-nonsense centre-half. He’s played over 200 League games and over 50 SPL games so he’s got great experience.

“He’s 27 so he is just about at his peak and, as he has already shown in the games he has played for us, he is a rock at the back. He has a huge presence.

“It is fantastic to have signed a player of his calibre.”

The Poppies manager also expects to add more numbers to his still slightly threadbare squad this week.

“I’ve not finished yet,” he stated.

“I’ve looked at 60 to 70 players so far in pre-season and I now know who I want.

“We are in discussions with Phil Ifil and hopefully that will be sorted in the next seven days or so.

“But there is also business ongoing with several players the fans haven’t even seen yet.”

Maison also paid tribute to the work chairman Imraan Ladak is putting in to make assembling a squad possible.

He added: “The chairman has been absolutely magnificent.

“We haven’t got a huge budget but he has been creative and shuffled things around to make some of these deals possible.

“It really shows his intent to make this club a success.”
