It's points that matter to Diamonds boss Peaks

Andy Peaks says time is running out for some members of his AFC Rushden & Diamonds squad as they struggle to get their season going

It’s been a disappointing week for Diamonds as a dour 0-0 draw with St Ives Town at Hayden Road last weekend was followed by a penalty shoot-out defeat at Kempston Rovers after a 2-2 draw in the first round of the Southern League Challenge Cup on Tuesday night.

But it’s the Evo-Stik League South Premier Division Central campaign where Peaks’ main focus lies at the present time.

Seven games into life at a higher level following their promotion last season, Diamonds have only two wins to their name and are hovering just above the relegation zone in the early table.

Their performances, in general, have been pretty good and merited more points than they have got so far.

But errors are being punished and Peaks knows they will need to be eradicated quickly as they bid to move up the table.

“We need to go and get some points, we have got to be hard to break down,” the Diamonds boss said.

“It’s a tough game this weekend, it’s a long trip and I really don’t want us to have a really long journey home.

“We have had reports on them and they have some good players so it won’t be easy, no game in this division is.

“I have been in football a long time and it’s nice when you have people telling you that you have a decent team and that you’ll be okay.

“But the fact is, I need to get some points. I don’t want to look like a good team that isn’t picking up the points it needs.

“I believe we could and should be higher in the table but we are where we are.

“We have got to start playing better for longer periods of the game.

“We need to be more consistent and we need to get rid of the individual errors. If we do that then the points will come.”

Peaks, meanwhile, has hinted at possible changes to his squad in a bid to get the season firing.

The Diamonds boss, in the main, kept faith with the players who helped the club gain promotion last season.

But he insists “time is running out” for some members of the squad to prove themselves at the higher level.

“I said I would give everyone 10 games in the new league,” Peaks added.

“We are getting close to that and I am close to making some decisions.

“I learned a lot again on Tuesday night so it was

very useful from that point of view.

“Time is running out for some of them because we have to start winning some games.”
