I'll stay for life if Poppies want me, says skipper Solkhon

Kettering Town captain Brett Solkhon insists he will stay at the club 'for life' as long as he is wanted at Latimer Park.

And the Poppies legend believes a tilt at automatic promotion will be on the cards next season if the current squad stays together.

Kettering missed out on an Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division play-off place by just a single point after Leamington held on to fifth place on the final weekend of the season with a 0-0 draw against Hungerford Town.

The Poppies kept their end of the bargain with a comprehensive 4-1 success at Dorchester Town but they ultimately fell just short despite a superb run of form during the second half of the campaign.

The attention is already turning to next season with Marcus Law keen to keep the current squad together.

Solkhon, who headed home the Poppies’ fourth goal at the weekend, which meant he scored their first and last goals of the league season, is hoping that will be the case and insists he has no plans of being anywhere else for next season.

Asked whether he will be staying on for another campaign, the Kettering captain said: “I hope so, I don’t think anyone else wants me!

“I have said plenty of times that I feel fit enough to go on for a good few seasons.

“If the gaffer (Law) and chairman (Ritchie Jeune) want me then I will be here for life.

“If we can get a pre-season together with this squad then we could go through a couple of leagues in my opinion.

“You look at the lads we have got – Ben Baker is 16, Ben Stephens is 19 and then you have the likes of Liam Canavan who is in his early 20s, there are some good young players in there.

“With this team, we can push on.

“We just have to stick together and hopefully that will be the case.”

Solkhon conceded the 1-0 home defeat to Bedworth United two weeks ago was a crushing blow to the club’s play-off hopes.

But he believes the players can “hold their heads up” after they emerged from mid-table obscurity following a mass overhaul of an under-performing squad in November.

“We did everything we could but we fell a bit short,” Solkhon added.

“We didn’t start the season very well and we were always playing catch up.

“We have picked up some great wins recently but the Bedworth game did cost us. The games caught up with us at that point.

“From November onwards, I think we have done fantastically well from where we were.

“The players have got to hold their heads up.”
