Hard work pays off in Poppies' success

The Poppies led twice in the first half thanks to Aaron O’Connor’s brace but were pegged back on both occasions.

However, Kettering found a winner through Rene Howe with 12 minutes to go as they kept their slim hopes of reaching the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division play-offs alive.

The victory moved them back to within nine points of fifth-placed Slough Town.

And Law was pleased to see his team’s hard work pay off.

“It was very difficult for both teams in the conditions,” the Poppies boss said.

“I thought we were handling them and Dunstable well to be honest but we made an error before half-time to give them the second equaliser.

“But we went in and we just said that it was all about us. We knew that if we worked hard and grafted then we would find a way through and that’s what happened.”

Law, meanwhile, paid tribute to frontmen James Hall, who hit the winner in last weekend’s 1-0 victory over Kings Langley, O’Connor and Howe.

He added: “I look at the three of them and they have won the last two games between them.

“James has come in with a proven record and scored three goals for us and it was great to see Aaron O’Connor back on the scoresheet as well.

“I know there was some thought that the last goal was an own-goal but Rene’s shot was going on target so he deserves to claim it. It was a big goal for us.”

The Poppies are back in action on Saturday when they entertain Chesham United at Latimer Park.
