Farrell happy to be in the goals for Diamonds

Ben Farrell has enjoyed a good couple of weeks, particularly when it comes to Tuesday nights.

The AFC Rushden & Diamonds midfielder scored his first goals of the Evo-Stik South League East season as he bagged a brace in the 4-2 win at Marlow.

And, a week on, he was at it again as two fine strikes helped Diamonds claim an emphatic 5-0 victory over Barton Rovers at Hayden Road.

Tuesday’s impressive win came just three days after Andy Peaks’ team has suffered their second loss of the league campaign when they were beaten 1-0 at Hayes & Yeading United last weekend.

But they responded in the perfect way to move back up to fifth in the table.

Farrell opened the scoring with a fierce strike from the edge of the box and then also hit the third as Diamonds stormed into a 3-0 lead before half-time.

“It was a very good night,” the midfielder said.

“We haven’t got a game until Saturday week so it was important to get the win and get the confidence going again.

“The first thing we said after the Hayes game was that we needed to produce a big performance and result and we managed to do it against a decent side.

“And it was great to get a couple of goals. I was striking some before the game and I must have hit four well over the bar! But I was happy to get it right in the game.

“It’s our role as midfielders to chip in with goals and make sure the pressure isn’t all on the strikers.”

As Farrell observed, Diamonds now have a break from action until a week on Saturday.

But they will return in an eye-catching fixture when they host unbeaten leaders Moneyfields.

And that’s a game that Farrell is already relishing.

“I don’t like breaks to be honest, I like to get my mind on to the next game,” he added.

“But the lads are going to have a little get-together over the next few days and then we will be looking to prepare for the Moneyfields game.

“They are flying at the moment, they haven’t lost a game in the league.

“Before the season, we were confident of getting promotion and we will have to beat teams like Moneyfields if we are going to do something.

“It’s a big game and I am already looking forward to it.”
