Diamonds move was right for me, says Sandy

The frontman was released by Kettering Town a week ago and then joined Andy Peaks’ side in time to make his debut in last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Royston Town.

Poppies fans queued up to pay tribute to Sandy, who scored 16 goals during the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One Central title campaign last season, following his departure.

And while his decision to join their near neighbours may not have gone down well in all quarters, Sandy insists it was the right move for him.

Diamonds are currently battling at the top end of Division One Central, although three defeats in a row have seen their title hopes damaged ahead of this weekend’s home clash with Uxbridge.

But Sandy is hoping there will be some good times to come for him at the Dog & Duck.

“I was really moved and touched by the reaction of the Kettering fans after I left,” he said.

“They took a shine to me and vice-versa. There were some great moments during the time I had there and I thought I did pretty well for them.

“I have had some bad times this season and possibly could have left earlier but it was the fans who kept me going so I have to thank them for that.

“It was a case of what was best for my career at this moment in time.

“I have known a lot of the lads at Rushden for a long time.

“I did have other options, some in the Premier Division, but it’s the right time for me to stay playing locally.

“It’s been good so far. The Rushden fans have been great and hopefully there will be reasons for them and me to smile in the future.”
