The scheme was started on Facebook and has now been backed by the club with majority shareholder Paul Glass confirming he will match all donations for the first 10 months of the project.

The scheme has already received good support and Glass believes it’s proof that the ‘Corby spirit’ is alive and well.

The Steelmen will be targeting another promotion push whenever the next Southern League Division One Central season gets under way having been right in the shake-up again when matches were suspended and the campaign subsequently being ended by the Covid-19 outbreak.

Glass, who headed up the consortium that helped rescue the club from financial crisis six years ago, said: “It’s a fantastic initiative from Mark Kilgallon (who started the idea on Facebook) to help Corby Town.

“When Mark first approached me I thought it was a great idea but didn’t for a minute think the supporters both at home and overseas would respond quite as they have.

“I should have remembered the Corby spirit and this will make a real difference to the team we are able to field at Corby Town next year.

“In these difficult times it’s amazing how many people have dug deep and both the board and myself are very grateful for the support.

“It’s no secret the club was in pretty dire straits off the field in its recent history and it has taken time, some pretty frugal running and tough decisions over the past few years to get the club in the position it is today off the field.

“We had to be really careful to ensure it’s short-term survival.

“With all what’s happening around the world, football has to take a back seat but with the town’s supporters help like this it just goes to show how integral a sustainable successful football team is to the local community.

“Now it’s time to get things right on the field.

“At present, we have 80 people committed to the promotion push with many paying the year up front and with me personally matching the donations we will have an additional £20,000 to next year’s budget which was already extremely competitive.”

Full information about the donation scheme can be found by searching ‘Corby Town’s Promotion Push Fund’ on Facebook.

For those without access to Facebook, monthly standing orders can be set up using the following details: Corby Town FC, HSBC Corby Branch, Sortcode 40-18-12, Account no 91426443 and fans are asked to put either their surname or initials alongside their donations with names due to be published in the matchday programme next season.
