The Steelmen ran out 5-1 winners in their latest friendly at Rothwell Corinthians on Saturday thanks to goals from Oneil Odofin, Ben Milnes, Femi Orenuga, Kurtis Revan and Jordan Crawford.

They are now preparing for a step up in opposition as they host Sky Bet League One side Milton Keynes Dons in their first home friendly of the summer tomorrow (Tuesday) night.

That is followed by the Steel Park Cup at the weekend, which sees the Steelmen take on a Newcastle United XI and a Leeds United XI over the space of two days while a PSV Eindhoven XI make the quartet for the showpiece tournament.

But boss Wright is content with the way his squad is “gelling” as they build up to the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division campaign, which will start with a home clash against Matlock Town on Saturday, August 13.

“It was another good workout and I got what I wanted from the game,” Wright said following the trip to Sergeants Lawn.

“It is a new group of lads but I am sure they will be judged against the backdrop of what happened last season when it wasn’t good enough.

“That puts a bit of pressure on them but they are handling it really well at the moment.

“They performed well at the weekend and they are gelling a lot quicker than I thought they would. I am happy with what I am seeing.”

Wright, meanwhile, has confirmed goalkeeper Oliver Sutton has returned to Steel Park after having a spell with the club last season.

“I am pleased to have Ollie back on board,” he added.

“I think it’s important to have a couple of goalkeepers competing with each other and we have two who will push each other hard during the season.”
