A case of what might have been for Steelmen star Sandy

Elliot Sandy admits he can’t help but think what might have been for Corby Town last season.

The Steelmen’s Southern League Division One Central campaign, along with all sport across the country, came to a halt last month as the COVID-19 outbreak took its grip on the UK.

Corby had been due to travel to fellow high-flyers Berkhamsted, who were sitting top of the table at the time and were five points clear of the Steelmen with Halesowen Town sandwiched between in second place.

It proved to be an eventful campaign for Sandy who was assistant-manager until Ashley Robinson was sacked as joint-boss with Sandy and Gary Mulligan reverting to playing roles only after Mark Peters was appointed into the role.

But, despite that, the experienced striker has been left with a feeling of unfinished business.

“I think, at one point, many were writing us off when it came to winning the league after the run we had where there were a few draws,” Sandy said.

“I think Berkhamsted beat Halesowen and there were a few points being dropped and, all of a sudden, we were going into the game at Berkhamsted thinking that if we won then it would have been all to play for.

“It’s a shame because a lot of work was put in by me, Robbo and Mullers behind the scenes to get us to where we were and then the club decided to make a change.

“But it’s one of those. We will never know what would have happened. The lads in the dressing-room were positive they could make something special happen.

“But, like everyone, we have to look at the bigger picture and that is making sure everyone is healthy.

“All the lads are staying in touch and we are keeping ourselves fit. We need to keep ticking over.

“I just think everyone is desperate to go and have a kickabout, it’s strange and hopefully the good times will be around the corner and we can get back to what we love doing.”

As far as the future is concerned, the situation across all of football remains very much up in the air.

Sandy confirmed a meeting is due to be held between the existing squad, Peters and chairman Stevie Noble once the social distancing rules are relaxed.

“We had a good core of players last season and the manager and the chairman have said there will be a meeting when the restrictions are lifted,” he added.

“No-one really knows how any club is going to cope financially after all this. Hopefully every club survives.

“But, as far as I am concerned, I am a Corby player and nothing has really changed.

“I am sure we will have a meeting about the plans for next season and then I am sure there will be a spell where players come and go as normal.”
