Backlog is a concern as Poppies return to action

Marcus Law has admitted the backlog of fixtures that Kettering Town are facing will make things harder in their bid for a play-off place in the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division.

There was frustration all-round again on Saturday as the Poppies’ clash with Dunstable Town was called off an hour-and-a-half before kick-off due to further waterlogging at Latimer Park.

Kettering will be hoping to return to action on home soil tonight (Tuesday) when they take on Dorchester Town (7.45pm).

The Poppies still have 17 games to play this season, 11 of which are at home.

But, with time beginning to run out, those matches will now be packed into the next couple of months.

Kettering are currently 11 points behind King’s Lynn Town who sit in the final play-off position but have five games in hand.

And Law knows his team are going to have to show some serious resilience if they are to ensure their season stays alive.

“It’s very frustrating for a lot of people,” he said.

“It probably highlights why the club are working hard to try to sort out the ground situation because the current facility isn’t helping the progression of the club.

“It looks like Thursday nights will now be coming into play due to the number of matches that have been called off.

“That means three or four matches a week while under pressure in our bid to make it into the play-offs. It does make life harder.”

Tonight’s visitors Dorchester are another side hunting a top-five finish and they come to Latimer Park on the back of a fine 4-2 success at Merthyr Town at the weekend.

“They had a great win at Merthyr on Saturday and they are in the mix, just like I think we are,” Law added.

“Every game is going to be a six-pointer for us from now on.”

The Poppies boss reported that there are no fresh injury concerns for tonight’s match.
