Ar Tarn assistant Williams set for his 1,000th game in management

For Williams, it will be his 1,000th game in management.

Released by Leicester City as a teenager, Williams went into management and coaching 20 years ago.

His first job was at Hinckley Town, under larger-than-life playboy Frank Worthington.

Worthington played for Leicester City and England and Williams said: “Being at a club with someone who’s been there and done it is a good way to start.

“I learned a lot from Frank and I keep in touch with him now on Facebook.”

Williams has since had spells at Shepshed Dynamo, Long Buckby, Oadby Town and possibly most memorably, Rothwell Town.

Williams, who runs a recycling centre in Hinckley, says his finest moment in management was when the Bones beat Nuneaton Borough in the FA Trophy in 2003.

“The atmosphere was unbelievable that day,” Williams remembered.

One of the heroes that day was Jon Mitchell and he will be in opposition on Saturday.

He’s now player-manager at Wellingborough Town and looking to keep the Doughboys in the UCL Premier Division.

Williams spent time at the Dog & Duck earlier this season before returning to Desborough for a third spell and said: “Jon is still as quick now as he was a decade ago.

“He’s as fit as a fiddle and he knows where the goal is.”

Mitchell this week played for the Doughboys in possibly their best win of the season, a 2-1 victory over fourth-placed Holbeach United on Tuesday night.

Deven Ellwood and Justin Dowling were the goal heroes after the team were given a pre-match rollicking by assistant boss Stuart Goosey.

He said: “I laid into the players at half-time against Spencer and they were brilliant in the second half, so I thought I will lay into them before the match this time.

“It worked. They were brilliant. I’ve never had any doubts about the ability of this team, but they have to be motivated every match.”

Desborough also enjoyed a midweek win, powering to a 4-1 success at Northampton Spencer, thanks to goals 
from Marvin Hill, Jason Turner, Jake Bettles and Dan Grainger.

The result means Ar Tarn have been beaten just once in their last six games.

Boss Chris Bradshaw said: “People were saying it was our best performance of the season, but I wouldn’t say that.

“I would say we did a professional job on a good team in horrendous conditions.”

Bradshaw reports skipper Aaron Davies and John Dean are doubtful for tomorrow.

Rothwell Corinthians boss Shaun Sparrow has told his players to forget their midweek horror show and record back-to-back wins.

Just a few days after beating Peterborough Northern Star 1-0 in the UCL Premier Divisiom, Corinthians were shocked 4-3 by Sileby Rangers at Sergeants Lawn on Tuesday night, having led 3-2 at one stage thanks to goals from Aaron Watts, Dan Cooper and Kalon Peniasko.

They will look to put the loss behind them when they host Eynesbury Rovers tomorrow and that’s followed by a trip to Wellingborough Town on Tuesday night.

Sparrow was missing several players against Sileby, but offered no excuses.

“It was a terrible game,” he said.

“We were furious afterwards.

“We got ourselves into a winning position, didn’t put the game to bed and gifted them goals.

“It’s embarrassing. We are a better team than them, but they have taken six points off us this season.

“But we can’t sit around sulking. We need to pick ourselves up and get back-to-back wins.

“We’ve done it before this season.”
